01Is oral appliance therapy covered by medical insurance?

Yes! Oral appliance therapy is a covered benefit under many medical insurance plans because sleep apnea is a medical diagnosis.

At Vista Sleep Solutions, we are in-network with several insurance carriers, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, the VA, and we are a Tricare and Medicare provider.

Of course, every insurance plan is different, so coverage and out-of-pocket costs depend on your individual benefits, deductible, and plan requirements.

The good news is that we can help you understand your benefits and navigate the process.

02Is TMJ therapy covered by medical or dental insurance?

Generally, no. Most of the non-surgical TMJ therapies we provide are not covered by medical or dental insurance.

There can be some confusion because an insurance plan may say that it provides coverage for TMJ treatment. However, that coverage often applies to specific surgical procedures rather than the conservative, non-surgical treatments we provide.

Our approach focuses on conservative care designed to reduce pain, improve function, and help stabilize the jaw.

Because these treatments are generally considered non-covered services, we are upfront about the cost so there are no financial surprises.

03Does oral appliance therapy really work?

Does an oral appliance really work for sleep apnea, or is it just an expensive mouthguard? It’s definitely not just a mouthguard.

CPAP works by using continuous air pressure to hold your airway open. An oral appliance works differently. It gently supports your lower jaw and the tongue to help keep your airway open while you sleep.

For the right patient, oral appliance therapy can be a very effective treatment for sleep apnea and snoring.

The important question isn't just, ‘Does it work?’ It’s ‘Is it the right treatment for you?’ And that's exactly what we help you determine.

05What happens at my first appointment?

Great question! You actually have two options for your first appointment.

The first is a consultation, which is really just a conversation. We’ll talk about your concerns, determine whether you may be a candidate for therapy at our office, and explain what treatment could look like and what your next steps would be.

But if you already know you’re in the right place, maybe you’ve been referred to us or you’ve already decided you want to move forward, we strongly recommend starting with an examination and X-ray.

That appointment includes a comprehensive head, neck, jaw, airway, and dental evaluation. This allows us to determine exactly what therapies are appropriate for you and develop a personalized treatment plan.

So instead of coming in just to talk about what we could do, you can leave knowing what you need, why you need it, and what your next steps are, so you can get started with your care right away.

If you're not sure which appointment is right for you, just give us a call. We’re happy to help you choose the best place to start.

06Why can't you use the X-ray my dentist already took?

‘But my dentist JUST took X-rays. Why do you need another one?’ Great question!

Most dental X-rays are designed primarily to look at your teeth and the supporting structures.

When we're evaluating a TMJ disorder, we're looking specifically at the jaw joints, the joint space, and the surrounding bone.

To accurately assess what is going on with your situation, we need current three-dimensional imaging to get the information we need about your joint.

04Is my snoring actually a problem?

Honestly? It can be.

Yes, snoring can be incredibly disruptive to a night’s sleep, but it can also be a sign that your airway is becoming partially obstructed while you're sleeping.

Snoring is one of the most common symptoms associated with sleep apnea, although not everyone who snores has sleep apnea.

So if you're snoring regularly, it's worth talking to your physician or having your sleep evaluated.

And if you've already been evaluated and don't have sleep apnea, we still have treatment options for snoring, including oral appliance therapy and other therapies depending on what's causing it.
